Karen Carlson | Fine Leather Handbags

My informal training in leather began in 1973 in San Francisco, when, after graduating from college (BA English Literature), it seemed like more fun to make belts and purses than to get a "real" job. That proved to be true. The era of craft shows was beginning. To be able to sell what I made to an appreciative audience, and the creative freedom afforded me was indeed exciting.

At that time latigo leather bags were popular. Working with the stiff latigo leather and using the toxic dyes to color the leather was messy and the work required strong hands. As styles changed I started working with the cowhide I currently use, a soft garment leather which is tanned and processed here in the United States. It comes in many beautiful colors, and presently I have available luscious complementary leathers to use as accent and embellishment; embossed cowhide, silkscreened cowhide and european boarskins.

I recently moved from California to New Mexico, and this beautiful environment has had a definite effect on my styling and sense of color. My design aesthetic has always been to keep the style simple so that the beauty of the leather shows through. I believe that the special touches that distinguish a well made leather bag are provided by the hand, and this philosophy is reflected in the detail work found in each piece.
